Whisky 2017 – 149-150 – Helvetica, Perth

So, I’ve easily hit 150 this year. With all the work travel, I’ve somehow managed this. Helvetia is a nice little whisky bar in Perth with around 400 bottles. Some interesting Ichiro’s bottlings there too. Worth checking out if you are there. These two drams were excellent. I don’t know much about Bellwether except they are from WA and this was a monster at 70%.

149 – Bellwether Cask Strength Port Cask peated 30ppm, bottle 38/38
Leather, honey, tobacco, maple syrup, dates, green olives, scones out of the oven. Honey, butter, toast, dust and bones, tobacco.

150 – Kilchoman Caroni (Rum) Cask by LMDW 2011
Apple juice, dried apricots, leaf matter, heather, salted butter, rocks in an old fire, pound cake, roasted parsnips. Leather, salt, butter, apricot cake, fireplace, green herbs, honey, gun powder.

Whisky 2017 – 33-36

33 – Carn Mor “Celebration of the Cask” Clynelish 1989 Cask 5888
Initially young wood shavings, yoyo biscuits, clotted cream, jammy fruit, tinned pineapple, liquorice. Coffee, mangos, baked cheesecake, egg white, wine tannins(?).

34 – La Maison du Whisky Artist #6 Mortlach 15 Years
Musk, wood, perfume, cream, sweat, chicos, cocoa, white peaches. Sarsaparilla, vanilla, artichokes, cream, salty, marzipan, egg yolk.

35 – Kilchoman Original Cask Strength
Lime cordial, band aids, pool chlorine, cherry leaves. Rubber, BBQ meat, smoked paprika, latex, slight cream, ash.

36 – Cadenhead North British 24 Years 1989
Butter, glacé ginger, apple pie, cinnamon, fatty, crushed ants, grilled pineapple, ginger snaps. Chocolate, crushed ants, lemon pith, ice cream.

Apricots, leather, white pepper, cream, tropical fruit cup, chocolate. Soufflé, green grass, butter, cocoa mousse.

18 – Liquid Treasures 6 Years Islay Port Cask
Honey, leather, gas, pepper, peat, cedar, pickling brine, seaweed, Terry’s dark chocolate orange, dried pineapple. Mineral salts, dry wood, flinty, soy sauce, egg whites.

19 – Hart Brothers Glen Scotia Olorosso Hogshead 24 Years 1992
Musk, pancakes, lemon zest, cake mix. Pancakes, salt, butter, passionfruit, orange zest, rubber

152 – Kilchoman Bourbon (Buffalo Trace) Cask Sample 2006
Autumn leaves, glue, white pepper, stewed apple, caramel. Mulch, salt, slight medicinal hit, vanilla, tinned peaches, potato chips.

153 – Kilchoman Cask Strength Quarter Cask
Caramel, leaves, salt, hand cream, apple pie. Beautifully medicinal and sweetness, chestnut honey, green herbs, nori and salty potato chips.

154 – Kilchoman 100% Islay 5th Edition
Yeasty, red apple, over proved dough, cloves. Young, saplings, nice sweetness, slight spicy note and peaches.

155 – Kilchoman 2008 Vintage
Cheese pizza with tomato, stone fruit, custard, strawberries. Salty, brown sugar, licorice, potato crisps, slight cocoa.

156 – Kilchoman Machir Bay
Leather, leaves, green bananas, sweat (but not in a bad way). Honey dew melon, slight smoke, key lime pie.

157 – Kilchoman Sauternes (d’Yquem) Cask
Yeast, lemon zest, brown sugar, caramel, peanuts, rubber, light fruit sweetness. Peanuts, black tea, toasty caramel, peanut brittle.

158 – Kilchoman Madeira Cask
Rubber, brown sugar, thick caramel, sarsaparilla, leather. Choc mint ice cream, cinnamon chewing gum, vanilla, woody, coffee.

159 – Kilchoman Olorosso Cask Sample 2011
Preserved lemon, vino cotto, marshmallow, grilled pineapple. Chinese BBQ pork, rubber, salt, meringue, menthol.

160 – Kilchoman Loch Gorm 6 years
Flinty, coal, rubber, match heads, gas. Salty, brown sticks. Not really a fan.

161 – Kilchoman Sanaig
Marshmallow, rosehips, salt, leaves, gooseberry. Leaves, salt, caramel, rock melon skin, done toasty note, slight cream.

I made it to 150 for the year and what a cracker 150 was, Heartwood’s 2 of 3. Simply an amazing dram. 

147 – Kilchoman The Trilogy Bourbon Single Cask 260/2010
Honey, roasted chicken and pork, potato chips, medicinal herbs, apple snow, leather and plasticine, sea weed and sea spray, stone fruit. Campfire, brown sticks and earth, caramel, green herbs, salt, lingering smoke

148 – SMWS 3.265 (Bowmore) Islay meets Provence
Caramel, sea salt, lemon zest, tobacco smoke, rosemary. Intense fruit, charcoal meat, lemonade, raspberries and dry herbs.

149 – Signatory Bunnahabhain 1997 Heavily Peated Cask 5516
Toffee apples, lemonade (again), hand cream, potato crisps, seaweed. Smoke, coffee, cocoa, grilled mackerel, preserved lemon.

150 – 2 of 3 Heartwood
Chocolate mousse, cocoa, stewed apple, toasted malt, rose petals, flat coke, egg custard, pancakes with maple syrup and ice cream. Toasted malt, roasted corn, sarsaparilla, brown butter, raspberry soda, milk coffee. Wonderful.

151 – Kilchoman The Trilogy Sherry Single Cask 199/2010
Honey, salt, fruit straps, caramels. Seaweed, medicinal herbs, flinty, coal, Xmas fruit, caramel, sea water.

 157 – Signatory Imperial 1995
White pepper, oranges, mulled wine, cloves, mineraly, heavy cream. Cream, cream, cream, dried fruits, xmas cake in summer, the final bite of a flap jack.

158 – Kilchoman Single Cask Sherry
Coke, cherry flavored medicine, slight bacon fat, a real heavy caramel on the nose. BBQ with Asian salad, orange zest. Wow!

159 – Douglas Laing’s Rock Oyster
Honey, spices, cucumber, vanilla custard. Cucumber, slight peat, slight pepper, honey.

160 – Springbank 17 Sherry Cask
Chocolate drops, raisins, oranges, prunes. Dried fruits, coffee and peat.

161 – Signatory Glenrothes 1997
Sulfur and rubbery, apple juice, plums and prunes. Green figs, sulfur and pepper, dates, dried figs.

162 – Signatory Clynelish 1997
Lemonade, marzipan, frozen Coke, mangos and passionfruit. Cream, passionfruit, coffee.

Whisky 2015 – 8-11

8 – Berry’s Glen Turret 34 Years
Chocolate, salt water, formic acid, a fruity sweetness I can’t quite place – maybe Kiwifruit. Oatcakes, fruity, lighter and friendlier on the palate than I expected. Finishes with vanilla and gooseberry.

9 – CV Hazelburn Singlemalt
Glue and brown sugar, kinda reminds me of rum with a (good) sickly sweet element. Banana and yeasty.

10 – Benromach – 10 Year Cask Strength
Flinty, herbaceous, caramel, salt, pipe tobacco and chocolate. Slight peat, sage and thyme, slight caramel sweetness and a salty finish.

11 – Kilchoman Port Cask
Wow! What a nose this things has. Loads of caramel, toffee apple a whiff of peat. Peanut brittle, olive oil, dry green bracken, smoked paprika, roasted peanuts.
