Whisky 2015 – 42-45

42 – Signatory Series Glenlivet 1997
Musk, rock candy, rubber, lemon and honey in hot water, coconut rough. Dry, sweet sugar syrup, salt and pepper.

43 – Talisker 12
Over ripe apples, wood, maple syrup, sweet salts, plasticine, flowers and cola. A beautiful dram that switches from bitter to sweet – leading to musk and rubber. I really like it.

44 – Compass Box The Last of the Vatted Malt
Hazelnuts, butter, salt, leather, bark. LPG (in a good way), charcoal, passionfruit and a residual candy sweetness.

 45 – Gordon & MacPhail 1990 Clynelish (2002 bottling)
Rubber (like bicycle tires), sulfur, tar, cake batter and salted caramel. Rubber, tropical fruit cordial, caramel. One of my faves so far.

I also tried a sip of the Starward Wine Cask. Loads of overripe bananas on the nose and fake banana flavouring on the palate.

Whisky 2015 – 38-41

38 – BenRiach 12 Horizons
Apricots, rubber, brown sugar. Egg white, xmas spices, pudding, salt.

39 – BenRiach 15 Dark Rum
Unsurpisingly smells like agricole rum, meringue, lemonade, leather, cucumber skin, chocolate pudding and vanilla cream. Icecream, formic acid, toasted marshmallows, grilled pineapple.

40 – BenRiach 1997 Marsala Finish
Chocolate mousse, egg whites, buttered popcorn. Huge hit of cream, apricots, and formic acid, chocolate milkshake.

41 – Linkwood 12
Yeast bun, raisins and butter, dry yeast. Yeast buns slathered in butter. Reminds me of nan cooper’s buns.

Whisky 2015 – 33-36

33 – Benrinnes 23
Rubber, chocolate, woody, heavy on the Sherry, musk and perfumed. Salty, woody, rubber, thyme and praline. Rock candy finish.

34 – BenRiach PX 1996
Banana, fake banana, milk duds, marshmallows, cola, something floral and I think orange zest. Salt, pepper, butter, melted butter, flapjacks, maple syrup, vanilla cream.

35 – Glenglassaugh Revival
Wood and dry herbs, salt, stale butter (not in a bad way). Tobacco and a tequila like smoke, pepper and cream.

36 – Glen Grant Five Decades
Stewed apricots, stewed apple, dried apple and cinnamon buns. Butter, cream, salt … Slight cherries and plump raisins.

Floral Whisky Tasting

Went to Whisky and Alement as part of Melbourne Food and Wine Festival for a floral whisky tasting. I’m not going to count these 3 in my tasting for the year, as W&A was packed with flowers and it was quite difficult to smell just the whisky. That said what a lovely idea it was to really explore the floral nature of whisky.

The three whiskies for the afternoon were; Glenore 8, Old Pulteney 12 and a Singleton 12.

Surprisingly, I thought the combination of geranium and whisky was quite good.

Would be nice to see bars do more interesting tastings like this.
