Whisky 2015 – 30-32

30 – Nikka 17 Taketsuru

Chestnut flour, cola and vanilla. Green grass, cola, salt, vanilla. Too underpowered for me.

I had a look at my notes from last year on this one: ‘Honey, toffee, easy. Vanilla and some cola to finish. Not much too it to be honest.’ Glad I’m sorta consistent.

31 – Redbreast Single Pot Still 21

An incredible nose. Tropical fruits (mangos, lychees) with cream, dust, carob, chocolate, yoghurt. Tropical fruits, long passionfruit, oyster shell, bracken, fresh yeast.

32 – SMWS 123.8 In the Spanish mountains

Plump raisins, orange zest, brown sugar and hay. Dried peaches and figs, iced tea, milk chocolate, chewy meringue and vanilla cream.

Whisky 2015 – 26-28

26 – Cadenhead Strathclyde 25
Rye and digestive biscuits, dried apple, candle wax, butter, exploded caps and some rubber. Dried pineapple, pepper, cloves and loads of creamy goodness to finish.

27 – Cadenhead Glenburgie-Glenlivet 29
Maraschino cherries, stewed fruits, dark chocolate and wood – brilliant stuff. Warm earthy palate; mushroomy, bitter herbs and green almonds… Oh and slight rock melon at the end.

28 – Smith’s Angaston Whisky 2000 Vintage
What an interesting drop. Smells like a cheap cinnamon candle with a slight brandy note with some candy sweetness and maybe proper cola. The palate is like German spice Christmas cookies, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves… Hot spice almost like Red Hots or Big Red gum. Salt and pepper lingers. As an Adelaide boy, I’m well impressed.

Whisky 2015 – 22-25

Last night’s drinking.

22 – Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 15
Cordial, pink musk, vanilla, marshmallows and buttery popcorn. Formic acid, light rubber, vanilla, honey.

23 – Signatory Fettercairn 1996
Grains toasted in butter, a touch of caramel and banana. Cucumber, a little smoke.

24 – Signatory Miltonduff 1995
Rock melon, slight kiwi and chocolate. Instant hit of cocoa, some spring onion, greenery, hay and dry grass. Normally I react poorly to this onion taste but I like it in this.

25 – The Whisky Exchange Edeadour 2006 oloroso sherry cask
Rubber, coffee, maple syrup, milk chocolate and caramel, slightly salty and dusty note. Vanilla, cola, oysters. Delicious.

Whisky 2015 – 19-21

19 – Nikka Coffey Grain
Underwhelming compared with the Malt some candy sweetness but for me little complexity something like spearmint lollies and glue. A bit of chocolate and vanilla on the palate.

20 – Nikka Coffey Malt
Chocolate banana lollies and a slight cola note – love the nose on this thing. Choccy-nana pud, cloves, pepper and powdered ginger.

21 – Connemara Turf Mor
Lovely caramel behind the peat, stone fruits and dried pears. Reminds me of Caol Ila smokey peanuts but then a lovely juicy fruit hit and finally some mushroom earthiness. Must drink more Irish whiskeys.

Whisky 2015 – 12-18

12 – Kavalan Solist Vinho
Cola, apricot and formic acid. Loads of vanilla. Tasty.

13 – Springbank Society Members 8 year old
Earthy chocolate, sugar cane, maple wood and dried apricots. Intense fruit sweetness on the palate to begin with candy cane, tobacco, herbaceous, lemon pepper, cream.

14 – Hakushu Bourbon Barrel
Banana bread, cloves and all spice, citrus, vanilla ice cream and formic acid. Fairy floss, banana flavouring and banana fucking milkshake, toasted coconut, even slightly cheesy notes and meringue.

15 – The Single Malt Scotch Whisky Tobermory 19 years – Whisky Exchange
Coconut rough, rubber and vanilla essence. Dried figs and dates, slight rubber and vanilla.

16 – Glendronach 1994 PX barrel 326
Melted butter, cake mix and brown sugar. Butter, vanilla, woody, rock candy. Huge and delicious.

17 – Balvenie Portwood 21
malted vanilla milkshake, dusty, banana. Vanilla and quite underpowered for me. Disappointing.

18 – Limeburners Tiger Snake
Really big hit of cloves, lime zest and ever so slightly dusty. Great palate of cola, cloves, vanilla and coffee.
