Whisky 2017 – 142-148 Japanese tasting

Another great tasting at The Elysian. The Yoichi was the stand out for me. Obviously the Speyside wasn’t a part of the tasting but a birthday dram bought for me. 

142 – Mars Malt Le Papillon, 4yo, American White Oak #1558, 58%, 1 of 599 Bottles
Bananas, hazelnuts, kiwi fruit, pound cake, macerated cherries, fruit straps. Oat cakes, butter, salt, lemon zest, banana cake, green gras.

143 – White Oak Akashi 5yo Exclusive for Shinanoya, White Wine Finish #61091, 59%, 1 of 342 Bottles
Rubber, dried pears, soy sauce, slight butter, dusty, red apples. Rubber, peanut brittle, melted butter, toasted grains, salt, roasted onions, white pepper.

144 – Kirin Fuji Sanroku 2016 Limited Edition 18yo Blended Whisky Oloroso Cask Finish, 43%
Cooked apples, ice cream, spiced cloves, reef tanning oil, toasted almonds, butter, crushed ants. Dried peaches and apples, toasted almonds, butter.

145 – Yamazaki Limited Edition 2017, 43%
Pencil shavings, pound cake, muscat grapes, Earl grey tea, red apples. Fruit flan, raw hazelnuts, cream, sandalwood, pepper.

146 – Yoichi Distillery Limited Bottling “Woody & Vanillic”, 55%
Apple snow, leather, pencil shavings, vanilla, boot polish, porridge with maple syrup. Just incredible mouth feel, spice cake, honey, butter, bracken, dried banana, pencil shavings.

147 – Ichiro’s Malt The Peated 2016 Edition, 54.5%, 1 of 6350 Bottles
Banana, chlorine, brown bread, butter, apricot nectar, carob. Hay, grass, salt, ashes goats cheese, toasted peanuts, chocolate, carob.

148 – The Whisky Agency speyside 43 years, 1973
Candle wax, fake clove spice, stewed plums, egg pudding, dried pineapple, mint, cola. Butter, pencil shavings, wax, plums.

Whisky 2016 – 65-67

65 – SMWS 127.44 Cantina Mexicana (Bruichladdich)
Plastic, sulphur, salt, pulled pork, roasted capsicum and pickled chilies, peppery. Taken aback by the initial sweetness, peppery and chilies, bitter cocoa, mustard fruits, toffee and rubber.

66 – Riverstown Ben Nevis 16 Years
Cream, bourbon, tiramisu, caramel, stewed apricots, candied orange, toasted coconut. Marmalade, toffee, cucumber, cream, pepper, yoghurt.

67 – White Oak Akashi 14 Years (White wine finish)
Beef stock, brown sugar, varnish, turps, leather. Brown sugar, maple, slightly floral, heavy and delicious.

Whisky 2015 – 78-85

Benriach and Heartwood are quickly becoming personal favourites.

78 – Benriach 15 Sauternes
Vanilla, cocoa, stewed apricots, crushed ants, rock candy. Vanilla, passion fruit, apricots, salt, cream and a lick of peat.

79 – Benriach 17 Solstice
Heavily peated, medicinal, pine resin, toffee, cherry and woody. Coffee, toffee, slight medicinal note and smoke.

80 – Benriach Peated PX Cask 18
Rubber, toffee apple, butter, cocoa, cream, tobacco, smoke. Medicinal, complex, cream and smoke.

81 – Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve 2008
Tropical fruit, rock melon, iced coffee, banana bread, biro ink. Banana bread, vanilla, yeast, grain, some flintiness.

82 – White Oak 14
Tar, woody, chocolate and shitloads of leather and tobacco, cola, bit of smoke(?!). Lovely musk sweetness, pepper, brown sugar, green bitterness, cloves, smoked meats.

83 – Hibiki Harmony
Chocolate, honey, vanilla, crushed ants. Light on the palate and then a hit of mango, cream, nutty.

84 – Heartwood Devil May Care
Nutty, rock melon, maple syrup, rose water. Toasted almonds, glue, rubber, fruit, dried figs… Huge vanilla finish. Very good.

85 – Adelphi Glen Keith 21
Bananas, yeasty brown bread, strawberry lip gloss, milk chocolate. Banana sandwich on rye with salted butter.
